What are fiber optic adapters?
Fiber optic adapters, or fiber couplers, are the facilitating devices that link two discontinuous fibers in a particular fiber optic network. The diverse portfolio they comprise of is designed to match corresponding connectors, for example SC, LC, ST, FC, and MTP/MPO. Such devices, which have insertion sleeves to align the ferrules, minimize signal attenuation because of the nominal repositioning of wired components.

Types of the fiber optic adapters

- LC Adapters: LC (Lucent Connector)/SC adapters are smaller than SC adapters, and they often feature in high-density applications. They have a push-pull style of operation and are recognized as compact ejectors.
- ST Adapters: ST (Straight Tip) adapter is a form of adapter to go with ST connectors, which have a simple rotary lock coupling mechanism. These fibers are mostly found in multimode networks.
- FC Adapters: The FC (Ferrule Connector) adapters are provided to be used with FC connectors that have a screw-on mounting mechanism. These usually work in single-mode applications where they are well-known for their precision and stability.
- MTP/MPO Adapters: MTP (Multi-fiber Termination Push-on) and MPO (Multi-fiber Push On) connectors are used. They can contain anywhere from 12 (maximum) to 24 individual fibers in one connector. Besides, these fibers are incorporated in high-density applications, when data centers are used.
- Hybrid Adapters: Such adapters in its first place are intended for connection of various types of optical connectors like SC/FC, SC/LC, ST/FC, ST/SC, etc. They help interconnects in applications that required linking of different types of the coaxial cables with a similarity in designing.
Fiber types for the fiber optic adapters
In fiber optic adapters, different fibers are categorized according to which specific purpose the network serves.
Single-Mode Fiber (SMF):
- Single-Mode Fiber (SMF): OS1 standard is for indoor applications for distances of about 2 kilometers, usually building or campus-based, while OS2 stands for outdoor use and long-distance telecoms, reaching distances of over 200 kilometers.
Multimode Fibers(MMF):
- OM1: The core size measures 62.5 micrometers, and the maximum transmission distance for this type of fiber is approximately 275 meters, which allows for signal rates of up to 1 Gbps.
- OM2: Featuring 50 micrometers in frame and lessening crosstalk to support over a distance of about 550 meters with 1 Gbps, OM2 shows a great improvement over OM1.
- OM3: Steady-state laser-based multimode fibers are called OM3, and these systems work well up to a distance of 300 meters. 10 Gbps (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) is optimized for higher-speed networks.
- OM4: OM4 offers an upgraded version of OM3 by permitting higher frequency bands and transfer medium distances of up to 550 meters; as a matter of fact it does not only have the capability of ensuring 100 Gbps over shorter distances.
Fiber count or Physical Configuration for the optic adapters
The amount of fibers connected by the fiber optic adapters is important for the physical configuration for the adapters to be considered. Here’s a breakdown of the common configurations:
Simplex Adapters:
- These methods connect a single fiber between two cables simultaneously or using two different fibers.
- They can also be used in cases where only a single transmission of data in one direction is required or where each fiber has to be treated differently.
Duplex Adapters:
- Duplex adapters create a simultaneous connection for two fiber instances, which are usually utilized for two-way transmission of data.

Quad Adapters:
- While the quad adapters are available to accommodate four fibers at once, regularly other types such as the duplex (two two-fiber coils of both pairs) or the simplex (only one-direction in one fiber) plugs are also used.

MTP/MPO Adapters:
- The MTP (multi-fiber termination push-on) and the MPO (four, twelve, twenty-four, and more single mode push-on connectors with 12, 24, 48, or even 72 fibers per connector) adaptors are made for multi-fiber connectors, which can carry a big amount of fibers.
